About this deal

It’s my Dad’s birthday in three months time, so I think I’ll give him this recently acquired copy of Moseley Shoals, after all, this is one of the two albums he most associates with fatherhood.

I have a distinct preference for the psychedelic rock side of the Britpop movement, which means that Moseley Shoals is right up my alley. Retro-obsessed as the Britpop scene was, few acts were as obsessed with the 60s as this band, even to the point where they were one of the few bands from the scene to assimilate soul music influences into their sound. I will say that a love for the Mod Revival isn't required for one to enjoy Moseley Shoals, as the Mod influences are largely restricted to the guitar playing of Steve Cradock. incredibly frontloaded these guys dont have an original bone in their body (in their defence, they've never claimed to be).Ocean Colour Scene are survivors as well as musical experts and they’ve become part of the classic rock fabric whilst continuing to investigate new sounds. It was a real shame, as songs like “One for the Road” and “Lining Your Pockets” indicated there was significantly more to Ocean Colour Scene than generic lad-rock, but I had to listen elsewhere for my musical kicks. The only places where Fowler stumbles are on laid-back slowburns like "Fleeting Mind" and "The Downstream", where he has a tendency to drift around without building to an appropriate climax.

In March 2011, the band released a 15th anniversary special edition of their 1996 hit album Moseley Shoals. The discography of the rock band Ocean Colour Scene consists of ten studio albums and thirty-four singles. Among that entire cohort of artists, Ocean Colour Scene is arguably the longest-lasting group whose material has aged fairly well. It was their breakthrough record, earning them huge mainstream success and spawning hit singles such as “ The Riverboat Song”, “ The Day We Caught the Train” and “ You’ve Got it Bad”.In particular, this is a more consistently energetic album than either Marchin' Again or One from the Modern, and that's the primary reason that I enjoy Moseley Shoals slightly more than its immediate successors.

Guitarist Steve Cradock has long been in demand as a sideman in his own right – Weller frequently sings his instrumental praises – and they’ve always enjoyed a healthy competition with Noel and Liam Gallagher: they supported Oasis at Knebworth when fervour for tickets was so high it’s reckoned to be the biggest demand event in British rock history. The BBC has a built a fantastic archive over the years and to be part of the drive to make it all available to download is pretty mad.The memorial by which the band can be seen standing on the front cover is the Jephson Memorial in The Jephson Gardens, Leamington Spa, UK.
