Club Whisky became very popular and American distillers petitioned for the inclusion of the word "Canada" on the bottle to distinguish it from their competing whiskies, thinking it would hamper the popularity of Walker's. The legend of Canadian Club began in 1858 and grew to become one of the world's most iconic whiskies. To try and thwart the rapidly increasing competition presented by Hiram Walker, the American distillers petitioned for the word ‘Canadian’ to be included on the bottle. When the 'Bottled in Bond' law was passed in America in 1894, stating that all whisk(e)y had to carry an age statement, this became a major selling point for Canadian Club.
