About this deal

To use a number of these DAISY audio book players, you will need access to a computer to enable the books and documents to be transferred to the device. Once the documents have been transferred across, the unit can be used independently of the computer. Audio book players designed to support DAISY format give people who are blind or have low vision a lot of functionality to access and enjoy audio books. Currently, our protected DAISY books can only be opened using a key issued by the Library of Congress NLS program. At present our protected DAISY books can be played on the Victor Reader Stream.

In this kind of book both the text and the audio are present and can be synchronized so the reader can listen to human narration and hear the text-to-speech voice at will to determine spelling, punctuation, and other information that may not be clearly conveyed through the narrated audio. These books work in players that do not support text-only books, and, while it is possible to have a human-narrated book, it is also possible to use quite human-sounding voices that are generally not found in products available to the individual blind user but that are used by producers of materials for the blind. One is audio-only DAISY, which is the most common. This is the kind of book that the National Library Service in the US produces. This format provides minimal text content and a set of recordings that the reader hears when the book is played. Audio only is commonly used for recreational reading employing live human narration. We hope to extend this offering in support of our mission to provide universal access to all knowledge. The four authors are known as Daisy Meadows. Meadows is the writer of the Rainbow Magic series, a variety of series written and illustrated for children. The magic features a variety of main characters of fairies that come from different groups and places. Also comes with a silicone case, rechargeable battery, mains charger, earphones and two USB cables. Digital Talking Books (DTB) go far beyond the limits imposed on analog audio books because they can include not just the audio rendition of the work, but also the full textual content and images. Because the textual content file is synchronized with the audio file, a DTB offers multiple sensory inputs to readers, a great benefit to, for example, learning-disabled readers. Some visually impaired readers may choose to listen to most of the book, but find that inspecting the images provides information not available in the narrative flow. Others may opt to skip the audio presentation altogether and instead view the text file via screen-enlarging software. Braille readers may prefer to read some or all of the document via a refreshable Braille display device connected to their DTB player and accessing the textual content file. DTBs containing a textual content file but no audio material might be accessed via synthetic speech, screen-enlarging software, or a Braille device. The Monitor will be available in the DAISY format beginning with this issue. To whet your appetite for the new format, here is an article from Greg Kearney in which he discusses the advantages of placing audio recordings and text in this format. Daisy and the Trouble with... is the perfect step towards chapter book reading for readers ages 5+!
