About this deal

In a pinch, it’s okay to lightly drape frost covers directly on top of plants. That is, as long as it’s lightweight and/or the plants are mature enough that it won’t smash them. It’s better than not covering them at all! Our eco-friendly 100% natural hessian rolls come in a standard 6oz specification and a heavyweight 9oz option. We offer three roll sizes in a standard 6oz spec; 137cm x 25m, 137cm x 46m and 91cm x 100m; and our 9oz hessian rolls are 137cm x 46m. Also known as jute, and sometimes burlap. Tarpaflex hessian rolls are organic, and fully recyclable and biodegradable. Select varieties thoughtfully. Certain varieties of kale, spinach, or cabbage may be more frost-tolerant than others. If you have harsh winters, selecting the most hardy varieties will help the plants survive longer! Different plant cultivars also have varying days to maturity, which is important to consider if you have an especially short growing season. Choosing faster-maturing options can help maximize your harvest before the deep freeze sets in.

Frost Protection For Plants - How To Protect Plants From Frost Frost Protection For Plants - How To Protect Plants From Frost

It really helps if tender plants are grown in containers so you can bring them indoors easily. If they’re in the ground you can dig them up and put them in pots to bring inside. The ideal place for tender, outdoor plants is a cool greenhouse. This will keep the frost off and the temperature above freezing, and make sure the plants get light and stay dry. This last point is really important as damp air and wet soil kill plants as often as freezing temperatures. Come summer, start fertilising plants with potassium instead of nitrogen. Potassium is stored in the plant’s cell sap, which increases the salt content and in turn lowers the freezing point making the plant more winter hardy. Applying nitrogen-rich fertiliser in autumn will promote growth, making the plant sprout too early and consequently more susceptible to frost. Additionally, nitrogen-rich fertilisers contain ammonium which inhibits potassium uptake and is counterproductive to winter hardiness. It is still important to be aware that many potassium fertilisers contain chloride which many garden plants may react strongly to. The winter hardiness zone refers to a geographical area that encompasses a specific range of climatic conditions that are essential for plant growth and survival. It is good practice to place thermometers in shaded areas to provide a guide to mortar setting temperature guidelines. To prevent frost-drying, add a layer of mulch around the plant and water on frost-free days. Frost drought leads to water deficiency in plants because the leaves transpire water but are unable to absorb new water due to frozen soil and eventually wither. Shallow-rooted plants, such as rhododendrons, are especially vulnerable. This is due to the fact that their roots do not penetrate deep into the soil, where plant-available water can be found. In the event of prolonged frost and winter sun, evergreen shrubs, roses and heat-loving woody plants must be protected. Cover the plants with air-permeable materials only, such as frost protection fleece or jute. To meet the functional requirements of Appendix C of our Technical Manual, minimum working temperatures should never fall below 2°C when working with masonry. It is imperative that regular temperature readings are taking when working during cold weather periods. All in all, working with masonry in cold weather can be dangerous, and it’s essential that you follow cold weather masonry construction and protection recommendations.

I’m in Michigan, one eyar I planted(before 10 day forecasts) and freaked out – snow in late MAY!!! According to the National Weather Service, frost advisories are usually issued when overnight temperatures are forecasted to be between 33 and 36°F.
