Regardless if it is deliberate or not, the first few chapters of Vagabond are fast, chaotic, brash and arrogant, perfectly reflecting the protagonist Takezo's extreme yet raw potential to become the best swordsman in all of Japan. The panels, though undoubtedly beautiful, are careless and carefree, almost gratuituously violent in the delivery of story. Ah yes, I love going on a journey with a broken main character who will find themselves over time. I have been waiting to read this for so long and it's off to an excellent start. The artwork is immaculate and has this stunning realism to it. Vagabond Vol. 1] (in Japanese). Kodansha. Archived from the original on August 30, 2009 . Retrieved August 9, 2023.

That continues until everything calms down, and the true pacing of Vagabond takes form. Thereafter, the plot starts to reveal itself in a hero's journey that I am fully on board with. Based on the real life experiences of Miyamoto Musashi, who many consider to be the greatest samurai of all time, the character we see here is angry and impatient, seemingly on a path of self destruction. It'll be a fun journey seeing him grow into the great samurai he's destined to be. Begley, Joshua (April 18, 2016). "Vagabond Vol. #37 Manga Review". The Fandom Post. Morning On Line (in Japanese). Kodansha. In 16th century Japan, Shinmen Takezou is a wild, rough young man, in both his appearance and his actions. His aggressive nature has won him the collective reproach and fear of his village, leading him and his best friend, Matahachi Honiden, to run away in search of something grander than provincial life. The pair enlist in the Toyotomi army, yearning for glory—but when the Toyotomi suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, the friends barely make it out alive. I know this is a long series so I'm sure it gets a lot better but I'm not so sure I'm invested enough in this. This was three volumes in one, if I have to read more than that to being invested then I'm not interested. Vagabond is based on the novel, Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. Originally written in the early 40's, Yoshikawa's fictional account became so well known that his version has blurred fact from fiction. Solomon, Charles (October 2, 2011).
