About this deal

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic material derived from renewable resources such as corn. PLA filament is easy and safe to use which makes it the most popular choice for hobbyists and schools. ... Manufacturers also use PLA materials to make parts for toys, medical devices and many other products. Thanks to its natural origins, PLA plastic can biodegrade into non-toxic materials making it a sustainable choice for 3D printing. We also managed to get great print quality with little stringing and warping. But boy, was the journey to reach that quality a pain. When rating finishes of eSun and Hatchbox polylactic acid filaments, do not simply take the manufacturers’ word. For instance, just because a brand claims to have a glossy finish, do not assume your finished product will. Customization is another advantage 3D printing offers. Rather than selling a standard product to everyone, a company can tailor the product to the specific needs of the customer. In the medical field, the ultimate goal is 3D-printing replacement organs using a patient’s own cells. This would eliminate the risk of tissue rejection and let patients live their lives without expensive drugs. Medical researchers are making steady progress, but prosthetics may be the first true commercial success for biomedical 3D printing. Startup companies like Unlimited Tomorrow and Limbitless Solutions are using 3D printers to create prosthetic limbs that perfectly fit the patient and match their natural skin tone. On the other hand, if you’re looking to optimize your prints as much as possible – finding the optimal slicer settings for the filament you use is one of the best things you can do, as even different brands for the same type of filament can require distinct values for an optimal printing process.

The Inland filaments now come on cardboard spools. On one hand, we like the environmentally-friendly spools . On the other, the filament seems to tangle somewhat as the spools’ edges fray , so keep an eye out for that.Unlike many other PLA filaments, this one doesn't require extreme temperature and pre-heated bed. It goes smoothly even if the nozzle temperature is 356°F. It's also worth mentioning that the material has decent dimensional accuracy, resulting in fewer blobs and zits. Just make sure that you've secured the end of the filament to the special holes (there are 8 of them) after removing the roll from your printer for storage. The Polymax PLA is tough. The prints turn out very sturdy. We ran multiple impact tests on the final prints. They survived like champs. It has high impact resistance, almost 7-9 times that of standard PLA in the market. The Polymax is also 20% tougher than ABS. Nylon (synthetic polyamide): In thread form, nylon is found in clothes, ropes, carpets, and other products that require high abrasion resistance. As a filament, nylon is particularly useful for printing bearings, gears, and other parts vulnerable to friction. Most entry-level printers, however, can’t handle the 250ºC nozzle temperatures needed to print nylon. On top of that, nylon filament readily absorbs water which has to be baked out periodically. The smaller diameter does make 1.75 mm filaments more sensitive to inconsistencies in the manufacturing process. A 0.2mm variation in diameter changes the 1.75 mm filament by 11% but only changes the 3.00 mm filament by 7%. The commercial 3D printing industry changed as a result of the past decades’ rapid innovation, taking additive manufacturing beyond prototyping to become a true manufacturing process.

Sanding : Just as in woodworking, sandpaper can create a very smooth final finish. Start with coarse-grit sandpaper to remove blobs and other blemishes from the print job. Move on to medium-grit sandpaper to create a smoother surface. Finish with wet, fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a high polish. Just be careful. Sanding creates a lot of friction and heat which can melt the plastic. With the eSUN’s superior layer bonding and adhesion, you get perfect prints every time with a smooth and shiny finish. If you want nice-looking prints and an easy printing process, the eSUN PLA PRO (PLA+) is the one for you. Source: Youtube Steve Weber

The Inland PLA is available in a decent range of colors, even glow-in-the-dark. Sadly, the colors aren’t exactly consistent between spools . We noticed some color variations on our test prints. Things changed in 2008 when the first 3D printing patents expired, freeing researchers and tinkerers from the threat of lawsuits. Around this time, researchers at Britain’s University of Bath introduced a concept they called the “ replicating rapid prototyper ” or RepRap. They wanted to create a low-cost, open-source 3D printer that could print most of the parts needed to build another RepRap. In theory, this would lead to an exponential growth in 3D printing availability and create a world of distributed manufacturing. By democratizing production, RepRaps would make everyday objects more repairable and affordable. The Overture PLA+ Filament is an ultra-strong product that goes far beyond everyday printing needs. Although it has a similar stiffness as regular PLA, it boasts advanced fracture toughness and is actually 5x stronger than most other filaments out there. For this reason, it's widely used for projects requiring extra toughness and durability. So, if you're going to create some functional parts, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better option than the Overture PLA+.

For those unfamiliar, a temperature tower is a 3D model specifically configured for the purposes of testing different printing temperature values in the same print, where the printing temperature increases (or decreases) for each section of the model to make it possible to observe the effects of different temperatures all at once and decide on the best one. After creating the custom material preset, you can Users who want a consistent finish with their products tend to go with eSun polylactic acid filaments. So, if a predictable finish is important to you, then eSun PLA filaments are a better option than Hatchbox filaments. Do Not Take the Manufacturer’s Word A few years later, Stratasys introduced a third approach: fused deposition modeling (FDM). The company’s founder, S. Scott Crump, invented FDM while making a DIY toy for his daughter. He fed a thermoplastic into a hot glue gun to extrude lines of plastic that formed the shape of a frog. Crump then repeated the process in layers until he had a plastic toy.Now coming to the smell. Boy, these PLA filaments smell amazing. Reminded us of pancakes. Make sure you aren’t hungry when using this filament. So, if you already have a set of dialed-in values that has always worked well for a different brand of PLA, you can keep the same print speed for Hatchbox PLA and not have any problems moving forward.
