About this deal

Of all the great empires the world has known, ours will be the shortest. Two hundred years of chasing the Godalmighty Dollar, and what do we produce? The A-Bomb and I Love Lucy.

Scudder spooling out the story about Wendy that he had put together in five days included some additions by her father (actually her stepfather). It was touching and I got a lump in my throat. He said to Scudder of his daughter:I'm updating this review in March, 2016, principally to change the edition. As I suggested in my original review, this is the first book in my favorite of all crime fiction series. My original copy is a reprint from 1991, which is when I first discovered the series. At the Left Coast Crime convention this week, I was browsing in the book room and discovered that one of the rare book dealers there had an excellent copy of the first edition from 1976. It's the one pictured here, and I was thrilled to find it. The cover blurb from James M. Cain, no less, pronounces the book as "Very Superior!" I couldn't agree more.

Not too badly written. Paints the Corby family as complete media tarts, and Schapelle as as much a victim of their greed for money and fame as of the drug syndicate whose shipment she was carrying. But there's no real evidence in the book that Schapelle knew she was carrying drugs - just the assumption that because her family was involved in drugs, she would have known. There are a few loose ends left tantalisingly dangling, so I suspect this isn't the last we've heard on this. It is important to remember these overlapping doctrinal truths, and to compare Scripture with Scripture as we think about this passage in its meaning. Jake Reichsmann - probably Herod (this is not entirely clear but seems the best fit to me as a) he's Jewish and b) he heads a rival bank/country).Even in modern times, high treason isn’t something to be taken lightly, but what if it could have saved millions of lives? What if, by assassinating Adolf Hitler, utter devastation on a global scale could be prevented? How different would things have been if the Führer had succumbed before he had Germany brainwashed into thinking war was the only way to regain national pride? These are the questions that are explored in Sins of the Fathers ( Skyhorse) by Herbert J. Stern and Alan A. Winter, the exciting sequel to Wolf. As a cop in New York in the 1970s, he wasn’t above taking bribes or framing someone. After he accidentally shot and killed a child while trying to break up a robbery, he quit the cops and left his wife and two sons to live in a hotel in Manhattan. He makes his living as an unlicensed private detective who refuses to keep records or file reports, and he gets information by bribing various cops and government workers. He drinks constantly and occasionally engages the services of prostitutes. BUT OH MY GOD. I started reading the book at about 4 thinking I would read some chaps during the two hour power cut. Being lazy nowadays - I had convinced myself I am losing my appetite for books. But Archer just proved that my tummy is destined for unseen obesity levels!

This is the BEST book I have read in the 16 years of my life. Sure I am an archer fan , but my expectations weren't really high after the average only time will tell (with a stunning finish though) By the end of the book there's a question about the rightful heir to the Barrington title and fortune: Is it Hugo's legitimate son Giles; or Hugo's (presumably) illegitimate son Harry? This is the cliffhanger that ends the narrative. The father of the girl, Cale Hanniford, isn’t satisfied. He calls in Matt Scudder to do a little digging, a little rooting in the underbelly where the real answers lie. Is Scudder a private investigator? Not exactly. He can’t charge for his services, but he can accept donations. He’s outside the law, and as you get to know him in this first book in the series, you’re going to find out just how far outside the law he is willing to go. The law stops here. Scudder just keeps going. The sins of the father is one of those ambiguous titles which may fit more than one character. But the most sinful AND the most fruitful of them is Hugo Barrington. The way the book is written simplifies reading. Each section carries its own motivations and villains. The most enjoyable passages for yours truly were the Maysie Clifton and Hugo ones.
