About this deal

There are lots of little author asides that work very well, expanding on the story or commenting on the characters. Macmillan Audio released the audio version at the same time, and it’s narrated by Emma Thompson herself, which really would make it seem as if she’s telling you the story. She then leaves surreptitiously, in accordance with what she told the children on her first night: "When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay.

Nanny McPhee embarks on a brand new adventure in this brilliant, funny and captivating novel based on the new Nanny McPhee film due for release 26 March. Based on popular films, TV series and classic children’s literature, Popcorn ELT Primary Readers are targeted at children in the early stages of learning English. The books were later adapted for the films Nanny McPhee (2005) and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010). In the end the children become good and decent, and Nurse Matilda leaves to attend another family of naughty children. In August 2018, on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, Thompson confirmed that she had written a third instalment, but that the studio thought it was too expensive to make, given the worse than expected performance of the second film. I also read the book (not all of it, I don't think), but I remember that even Emma Thompson said that the stories in the book weren't really used and that Nurse Matilda was a little naughtier. This book is delightful and charming, and as someone who saw the movie first, I was not disappointed.

If you are interested in the insider scoop on movie-making, in addition to the film diary, you will enjoy my post on Emma Thompson’s Advice to Aspiring Actors at 5 Minutes for Mom today.

Her Inspector Cockrill short stories and a previously unpublished Cockrill stage play were collected as The Spotted Cat and Other Mysteries from inspector Cockrill's Casebook, edited by Tony Medawar (2002).

Brown is being forced to marry the foul Selma Quickly, a garishly clothed, thrice-widowed gold-digger, whose character did not appear in the books. wittily written, this gives a delightful insight into the craft of film-making and the accidents (Rhys Ifans breaking a foot playing football) that can hold things up, and will provide lots of trivia-spotting for children who watch it on the big screen .Nanny McPhee has five lessons she must teach the family, most of which involve some sort of magical activities going on such as flying piglets or baby elephants in the bed. Besides their father, the only one the children will ever listen to is Evangeline, the family's uneducated but beautiful and sweet-natured scullery maid.

But one magical nanny knocks on their door, and her mission is to teach the 7 children how to listen, respect others, and everything kids should do.It always seems like they're just cashing in on their fame and using children to pad out their bank balances, but with Emma Thompson, who adapted Sense and Sensibility so beautifully, I felt hopeful of something rather better. She teaches the children to behave, and deals with the fearsome and pernickety Great Aunt Adelaide Stitch. You get to hear about the costumes and make up she has to wear for the film, all the efforts made in set design and the props department, as well as all the trained animals they use on set. The movie stars Emma Thompson as a very unattractive (an understatement judging by the reactions of the other characters), magical nanny who helps bad children become good, shedding her ugliness along the way.
