About this deal

I've used both (and the forte, and most other Baratza grinders), and again, the SGP has a lot of pros vs the Virtuoso, mainly where features and ease of use are concerned, and I think they're incredibly evenly matched where cup quality is concerned, in fact, this more scientific comparison resulted in the Smart Grinder Pro being awarded the title for the best particle uniformity. Anyway, love your videos and the fact that you don’t take yourself too seriously in the sometimes snobby world of coffee! In reality, though, I find that at the factory pre-set 6, there's a bit more fine grinding range to be had by dropping it to grind size 5 if you find you need it.

It's worth pointing out, also, that if you're asking the question about grind size, this only really makes any difference if you're using freshly roasted coffee beans. Delivering barista-quality performance using a 54mm portafilter with 19 grams of coffee for full flavour and a powerful steam wand to create the microfoam required for latte art. If you watch the various reviews and comparisons, you'll find that the Smart Grinder Pro is usually found to be quieter than a lot of other grinders, and it's among the quieter grinders I've used. With the Smart Grinder Pro (and the dose control pro, and all of the integrated grinder machines from Sage) the outer burr has a thread, which enables you to shim it by simply adjusting it to one of the numbered settings, from 1-10. There are pros and cons of each of these coffee grinders and it all depends on the type of brew method you use, the precision of grind you desire and your budget.I chose this grinder due to wanting the ability to switch between espresso and drip filters (which we grind and pack for trips away camping etc). In other words, it was the environment that the coffee machine was in, in which the changes were happening, not the hopper, but the hopper wasn't providing any protection against this change in humidity. Intelligent settings help your grinder achieve perfect results regardless of how fine or coarse you require your beans. But I first wrote my Sage Smart Grinder Pro review back in 2016, which at the time of writing is nearly 8 years ago! If you are new to grinding your own coffee, you will soon realise that there is no perfect grind setting and different beans will require adjusting the grind size (even the same beans may require adjustment as they age).

I'd previously made the assumption (as this has happened to me many times with integrated grinder machines) that it was an issue to do with the humidity in the hopper changing in integrated grinder machines like the Barista Express or the Oracle when the machine is turned on, but I found that the changes in humidity in my studio, which is a fairly normal environment, changed by as much as about 12% during a period of about an hour, both outside the hopper, and inside the hopper. In addition, its built-in safety system prevents overheating so your coffee stays at peak flavour without burning or bitter taste. If you’re a fan of Sage’s amazing coffee machines and already own a Sage the Dual Boiler, you can take advantage of their White Glove Service*.The coffee grinder comes with fittings for two different portafilter sizes as well as a container to collect the grinds if you are brewing anything other than espresso. even if I did, coffeeblog probably had three readers at the time, and one of them was my mum, so I doubt it would have made much of a difference ;-). Purchasing my first home grinder would be my first foray into expanding my coffee knowledge and experience and this seems like a great grinder. Like with any appliance or product with a electrical parts you are at a higher risk of potential damage and faulty technology. The fact that you have two sizes of portafilter catered for and a vacuum sealable container, it's amazing, they've thought of everything.

If you leave your beans either next to your machine in an open container, or in the hopper (because the hopper gives no more protection from the environment than an open container would, from what I can gather), you may find that you dial in, and come back to the machine an hour or so later in the day to find you're no longer dialed in, the shot runs either a few seconds faster or a few seconds slower, leaving you scratching your head. It ticked all of the boxes for me, in theory, and given that I was wanting to grind for a wide range of different brew methods, espresso included, I couldn't see many other options without upping the budget by quite a bit. I remember being impressed with the attention to detail not only where features are concerned, but also with the bits it comes with.

I found this blog and along with Kev’s great articles, videos and a couple of other YT channels have been diving down the home barista warren. Finished in smart stainless steel with black accents, the Smart Grinder Pro perfectly complements Sage’s range of coffee machines. I’ve had my smart grinder pro for over 2 years now, I grind a LOT of coffee with it, and it’s great, no electrical problems at all. Will be reading a lot more once I get started and will look at the coffee too 🙂 Are there any discounts at the moment for the grinder Kev?So I contacted Sage support, they thought I'd broken it too, and they swapped it out, with no delay and no questions asked. The collar allows you to manually adjust the size by turning anti clockwise and lowering the blades closer to one another, making the grind finer and vice versa. I didn't actually break it, though… I'll explain later what had happened, now that I understand what I'd done, but I thought I'd broken it.
