About this deal

David: There are three core Chaos Space Marine characters in Angron: The Red Angel , who each represent different points along the spectrum. It explores the twisted brotherhood of the World Eaters, it shows how horridly enslaved they are and how desperately they hate Angron - just as much as they're still mad for his attention. David: With Angron, and characters like him, you don’t really look at them from the inside – from their perspective.

So we learn quite a bit about the World eaters and Angron is left to his entry in the Primarchs serie. David Guymer is a freelance author, PhD in molecular microbiology (which still comes in more handy than you might think), and tabletop warlord based in the Yorkshire East Riding. I just can’t help but feel there’s a fundamental flaw in the book, in that I just don’t find Angron interesting. I’m not suggesting that anyone should read sixty-plus books to understand one slim novel, but that kind of familiarity would doubtless help. I do think that it does add to the plot however, for there is not much that can really be done with Angron post-heresy story wise.Equally consumed by Angron’s mere existence, they at least have different ideology to the rest of the cast. I think it’s their valiant and futile attempts to overcome the burning ball of rage that is Angron, are the high points of the novel. WarCom: Did writing Ferrus Manus: Gorgon of Medusa and Lion El’Jonson: Lord of the First help explore how Space Marines interact with their Primarchs on a personal level? It’s weird too because David Guymer didn’t seem to cause these issues for me with The Court of the Blind King. We have Kossolax the Foresworn, a powerful warlord and the current master of the Conqueror – Angron’s ancient flagship.

Naturally, Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Betrayer was a big part of my preparation, being the seminal Horus Heresy World Eaters novel. They could have been larger than life characters, but boiled down as they are to big, stompy, angry men, they sort of blur into one. You want the inside scoop on a Traitor Legion in the same vein as, say, the Night Lords books, here's your huckleberry. My interest dipped a few times, but that might have been my mood more than any fault of what Guymer wrote. The book does both immense justice, and manages to portray the world eaters in fascinating light both from inside the legion through characters such as Kossolax (My personal favorite) and outsiders such as Leidis. WarCom: What kinds of characters and aspects of Chaos can readers expect to see through the lens of the World Eaters? But also the breadth of work across the Horus Heresy series, as lots of authors have written about the Primarchs in lots of different situations, and the reading I did for both books put me in a good place to continue Angron’s story.
