About this deal

It’s honest, it’s raw and it’s opened up my eyes to a lot of unresolved trauma that I have been carrying that I possibly wouldn’t have recognised before now but please do not think it’s a self help book, it’s witty and it’s real - I’m going to recommend this to some friends who I know will also take away something more from this.

If I was making music today and I put out a track and suddenly one person said ‘oh you should change the bassline, it’s not quite right, that hook is not quite right’, why would you listen? On his mother reading the book, he said: “My mum knows everything about me, as much as I want her to know about me. I went over the pandemic as well, I went when dancing wasn’t allowed on the Island and all the clubs were closed.Tony’s candidness is inspirational, but there are certain things that Claire from Coventry doesn’t need to know when she picks up her copy from WHSmith.

I Don’t Take Requests is Fat Tony’s breathtakingly candid and outrageous memoir of a life of extremes. This is the first year that an Attitude Award has gone to a book that has made a significant difference to the LGBTQ+ community. DJ and LGBTQ+ activist Marnoch said: “Both myself and Michael Hennegan are beyond honoured to receive this inaugural Attitude Book Award. His tales of London nightlife back in the day and battling his addictions are addictive to listen to and keep you wanting more. Following personal problems resulting from his numerous addictions, Fat Tony decided to give up drugs cold turkey, spending six months in rehab to beat the affliction. but Tony says his career derailed just after his 39th birthday, when he a five-day bender left him on the edge of death. Instead, we went about it in reverse: first writing the synopsis, then finding the agent, and finally the publisher. Now with an international reputation, he is as in demand as he was when first starting out 30 years ago.

Tony does everything with a wink and a nudge, and his new book, slated for release in May 2022, makes for a must-read. Oh, don’t get me wrong, we still row and he can still be a c**t, but now I understand the reasons why and can diffuse the bomb in seconds. To know that people have read and heard my story – a story which at times was so hard to put down in words – means the absolute world.

Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton and the Beckhams - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. I told him to **** off, and the guy pointed back over to Stevie and was like, ‘He’s just there, and he wants this record. He knew that if I was running around the estate dressed in drag I was going to have a lot of problems and he would stop me doing it; he knew society wasn't ready for it'.

listened to Fat Tony reading this on Audible and whilst he definitely isn’t as polished as other narrators, it was absolutely the best way to hear his story. Here he tells the most extraordinary stories of depravity and hedonism, of week-long benders and extreme self-destruction - and of recovery, redemption, friendship and the joy of a good tune. Few people have crammed so many lives into one: when your first line of cocaine is aged 16 with Freddie Mercury, where do you go from there?Getting him through his darkest times was Taylor, his late pet, who he still says good morning to and good night to. DJ Fat Tony has been described as ‘the closest thing that club culture has to a national treasure’ and the ‘unlikely cult hero of quarantine’.
