About this deal

The writer was flattered by the interest in a second potential series of This Is Going To Hurt, starring Ben Whishaw, but said it was written as ‘a one and done’ (Picture: BBC/Sister/Anika Molnar) I work cleaning on hospital wards and see doctors who are so young. Should they go later into the profession after doing different jobs? I feel they’re unapproachable because being a doctor is all they’ve done.

I wrote This is Going to Hurt with a beginning, middle and end. I wanted it to be about the mental health of healthcare staff. I did what I set out to do and made a taboo subject an unmissable conversation. I have no plans for a second series, I’d hate to do one for the sake of it. But I am in the early stages of a new project which will hopefully become something, and, if it does, will be very different but, hopefully, people will watch it. It’s a very big question, and it’s a bigger question than ever. When I left medicine, I was the first or second person in my cohort of hundreds to leave. And these days, I can’t think of the last time I spoke to a doctor who wasn’t talking about their plan B, whether that was going part-time or moving to another country or working in a different industry entirely. But all I’ll say is, being a doctor is an amazing, brilliant, precious career. But if you’re struggling, and if you’re not enjoying it, you can’t do the best for your patients. And there are lots of people who say, “Oh, you must stay in the job no matter what”, and that’s unhealthy and unhelpful. Just work out what it is you want to do. Hilarious and heartbreaking, horrifying and humbling, Undoctored is the astonishing portrait of a life by one of Britain's best-loved storytellers. Vitamin D provides far-reaching and magnificent benefits when restored. We aim for a 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood level of 60 to 70 ng/mL, typically achieved with 4,000 to 8,000 units per day of vitamin D 3 in gelcap form. Delay measuring blood levels for at least 2 to 3 months after initiating or changing dosage to allow the full effect to develop. Which do you prefer: people asking you for medical advice at parties, or people recognising you and asking you about Ben Whishaw? When I was writing her dialogue, I had Harriet Walter in my head. I didn’t actually think that Harriet would say yes, because she’s Dame Harriet Walter!’ Diabetes and much of heart disease are caused by a poor diet, yet we spend the rest of our lives on an expensive medication. That’s what Kay does: bodies exploding. But Undoctored is also – and I do not know how conscious this is – an exploration of the comic personality type. Comics explode too: with words; with rage. Foods that trigger insulin the most are therefore the most potent for weight gain, while their absence allows weight loss; the equation is quite simple. Undoctored is the spark of a new movement in health that places the individual, not the doctor, at the center. His plan contains features like:

Interesting. I'd already read Wheat Belly by the same guy, so I was familiar with many of his arguments. Basically he's saying that But, if you've read anything by Kay, you know that even when the subject matter is horrific or sad, he is very, very funny. The humour is often on the raunchy side here, but there are also moments of raw honesty. He puts it this way: "I've never thought of those two theatre masks as comedy and tragedy, more as how I present myself on stage versus how I actually feel." The structure of the book makes it very easy and even addictive to read. And, like in his children's books, there are some fun running gags: his made-up metaphor "like a wolf on a panini," and faking an anglicisation "replace-all"-gone-wrong to turn participants into "particitrousers." There is an emphasis on wellbeing in hospitals but when you dig into it, it often just amounts to a Zumba class. A recent report published by the GMC intended to improve support for the mental health of doctors but its recommendations were not taken on board by the government. People have a huge problem with seeking help. There is always the feeling that if you speak to someone, word will get out. There needs to be a culture, in medicine, that is less militaristic where people can talk openly. Juniors should be able to tell their bosses when they’re struggling, bosses should actively look out for their juniors. All staff should know where they can turn and trust they can get help that will not compromise their careers (at the moment, you are almost taught that doctors should not struggle). Were there any aspects of the TV adaptation that veered away from the intent you had in the book, due to trauma being censored ot subtlety lost?Magnesium is the most commonly depleted mineral from prior grain consumption—with restoration yielding substantial benefits. We aim for a daily magnesium intake of 400 to 500 milligrams of elemental magnesium. Comedy is Kay’s forte but, as the first memoir related, he hung up his stethoscope after a tragic event: one of his patients lost her baby because of an unforeseen complication with her pregnancy and had to go into ICU for an emergency hysterectomy – and while it was not his fault, he felt it to be his responsibility and the catastrophic nature of it affected him profoundly. On the strength of talking to him, I’d say it still does.

Kay is known for being active on social media and remains a big supporter of the NHS and its staff. That said, the book was repetitive. Some of the bashing of the current healthcare system seemed fair (👎 corrupt pharmaceutical companies!), and some seemed unfair. I personally know many doctors, PAs, and nurses who genuinely care for their patients and long to help them and not exploit them. The book would have been more helpful if it had talked more about life beyond the six week Undoctored protocol and how to implement the lifestyle in a family with children. Basing our diets on evolutionary claims of what our forebears supposedly ate really isn’t something I find convincing, but it’s the thing in these paleo sort of circles.
