About this deal

It's nearly Christmas, and it's time for everyone's favourite Shirley Hughes characters to get ready for the most magical time of the year. Charmingly illustrated and and wonderfully written, the reassuringly warm stories of Alfie and his day-to-day activities make the ordinary extraordinary and will make a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any child aged 3 and above.

All About Alfie | BookTrust

In 1930s Liverpool, young Bronwen and Dylan find kindness from an unexpected source when they are frightened by what they think is a ghost on Christmas Eve. This collection of three classic Alfiestories is a charming reminder of just how perfectly Shirley Hughes understands little ones. Shirley began to write and draw her own picture books when her children were young. Her first book - Lucy and Tom's Day - was published in 1960, and she followed it with, among others, Dogger, and the Alfie series. Her books include the wordless picture book Up and Up, collection of rhymes and poems Out and About, and for the very young The Nursery Collection. Shirley Hughes was born in West Kirby, near Liverpool, in 1927, and studied fashion and dress design at Liverpool Art School, before continuing her studies at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford. She started her career as a freelance illustrator in London, illustrating other writers' work, including Noel Streatfeild, Alison Uttley, Ian Seraillier and notably Dorothy Edwards's My Naughty Little Sister series. Dogger is Dave's special toy. So when Dogger gets lost at the funfair, Dave is desolate. Will they find each other again? Exploring concepts of love, loss and kindness, this classic tale will be cherished by the entire family and will particularly appeal to any child who has a favourite toy.An excellent book set featuring four books written and illustrated by Hughes is our Shirley Hughes Collection 4 Books Set. This beautiful set contains All Around Me: A First Book of Childhood, Time for Tea: A First Book of Cookery, Round and Round the Garden: A First Book of Nursery Rhymes and Trotter Street: Four Favourite Stories. These first book of stories have been a great way to introduce new experiences to children and try to help ease any anxieties they might have around trying something new.

There are presents to be hidden, Christmas trees to be decorated and carols to be sung. And when Christmas Eve finally arrives, will Father Christmas come for Lucy and Tom, Alfie and Dave? This affectionate portrait of family life is the story of a naughty three-year-old sister who is obstinate, inquisitive and full of mischief.Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. In 2007 Dogger was voted the public's favourite Greenaway winner of all time. She was Highly Commended for the Greenaway Medal for The Lion and the Unicorn in 1998. Shirley received an OBE in 1999 for services to Children's Literature, and a CBE in 2017. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was the first recipient of BookTrust's Lifetime Achievement Award. She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations. Lily and mum are worried when Bobbo the toy dog goes missing - but he soon turns up in a school playground.
